Seed Sorting
Join us as we sort through all of our seed donations and organize our resource center in preparation of the busy garden season. In addition to sorting seeds, we will be counting and organizing supplies in our resource center. Enjoy casual conversation with like minded volunteers. If you are part of our Food Growers Network, you can also choose your seeds while sorting.
Volunteer Kick-off 2019
Join us as we kick-off our volunteer season. We are excited to have one of our earliest supporters, Donna Hisson, join us and discuss square foot gardening. Volunteers will be able to sign-up for builds, Food Growers Network members can pick up seeds, and you can chat with like minded volunteers and gardeners.
Volunteer Event: Client Bag Preparation
We would like to invite everyone to come help us pack up client bags in preparation of our build season. We need to prepare over 80 bags with garden tools and seeds for clients. We'll also be organizing our resource center to get ready for all our seedlings to arrive. All ages welcome, little ones can help put tools in bags too and if they get bored we'll have some garden coloring sheets they can color.
Growing a Food Garden through the seasons
Learn about the many ways a vegetable garden can be grown in the region to benefit the nourishment of you and your family, as well as the greater community around you. Learn tricks of the trade like square food gardening, using raised beds, as well as identifying way to extend your harvest into the fall season with succession planting. The GardenWorks Project, established in 2012, promotes organic sustainable agriculture within the western Chicagoland region to promote food security and to nourish neighbors in need.
Cooking through the seasons with your fall garden
Join us at Loaves and Fishes for two separate events to learn how to prepare your fall garden for an extended season of fresh vegetables! Olivia Melgoza, Illinois Nutrition Education Program instructor, will be demonstrating how to cook delicious recipes that use produce that can be grown in a fall garden. Come learn cooking tips, sample the recipes, and leave with seeds to extend your home food garden!

GardenWorks Food Readers
Join The GardenWorks Food Readers Book Club's first meeting to discuss the highly acclaimed book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat."As the U.S. population made an unprecedented mad dash for the Sun Belt, one carload of us paddled against the tide, heading for the Promised Land where water falls from the sky and green stuff grows all around. We were about to begin the adventure of realigning our lives with our food chain." Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.
