Meet Our Intern- Sam Noreen

Hello everyone, my name is Sam! I am one of the 2018 summer interns and I am extremely excited to work with this organization for the next few months. After attending universities in Missouri and Florida, with varying majors, I decided to go after what I am passionate and interested in, which is dietetics. I just recently switched to this concentration when I transferred to Illinois State University. I love learning how food is broken down and used throughout the body to keep us healthy. I am curious to learn more about how dietetics can be integrated in the farm-to-table movement.

I first became interested in horticulture and nutrition when I started working at Ball Horticultural Co. in 2013. I am still currently on their grounds crew and feel so grateful that I get to work with a fun, hardworking group of people. I also like to be involved and believe in giving back to the community. I have helped with a food forest at my university in Florida, packaged food with Kids Against Hunger, prepped produce with FreshFAVs at ISU, and currently volunteer with Pets and Vets USA.

My role this summer at GardenWorks is to maintain raised beds at our community garden location across from St. Michaels in West Chicago. I have 2 project beds at this location specifically with the goal to determine the nutrient content of the beds and how that could help feed a family. I am also serving as a resource for our Community Garden Program recipients and will be keeping in touch with them throughout the summer.

I would love to hear about your experiences with GardenWorks and hope to be able to meet you!
