Position Title: Executive Director

Position Reports to: The GardenWorks Project Board of Directors

Employment Status: Part-time, 20 hours per week average

Start Date: October 1, 2017

The GardenWorks Project is seeking an Executive Director who, under the leadership of the Board of Directors, will be responsible for management of the organization, including developing, leading, and executing strategies, plans, programs, and projects. This is a unique opportunity to lead a growing and dynamic organization.

Organizational Background/Mission

The GardenWorks Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving DuPage County, IL, was founded in 2012. Our mission is to empower, educate, and promote organic suburban agriculture to improve the wellbeing of our community, the environment, and families facing food insecurity. Qualifications and Preferred Skills

The ideal candidate is a creative, energetic, positive, self-directed professional with a proven track record of leadership, fundraising, engaging and establishing effective outcome-oriented relationships with diverse constituencies, and successfully and transparently completing projects.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelors degree (Masters degree or coursework toward Masters degree preferred)

  • Three years senior management experience, including program development, strategic planning and employee relations preferably at an service-oriented organization.

  • Experience generating support through grants, foundations, corporations, fundraising events, and individual donors.

  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to effectively juggle multiple and/or competing priorities.

  • Ability to self-motivate, set and meet goals/deadlines to achieve desired results.

  • Availability to occasionally work at events on weekends and evenings.

  • Strong public speaking skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to develop, provide leadership, and show commitment to the organization's mission/vision/values.

  • Commitment to empowering people to grow their own food using organic methods.

  • Experience planning, monitoring, and evaluating operating budgets.

  • Skilled in relationship management and building board strength.

  • Ability to promote, market and clearly explain the services that The GardenWorks Project offers to the public, businesses, donors, and other organizations in the community.

  • Ability to effectively manage employee relations issues, conflicts and resolve conflicts successfully.

  • Ability to use standard office equipment, Microsoft Office and Google applications.

  • Proven experience in grant writing and management.

  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required.


Work Environment: Work is completed independently remotely, alongside staff at our Suburban Agriculture Resource Center (103 W. Washington St., West Chicago), and outdoors in garden settings.

Employment Status: Part-time, exempt, average 20 hours per week. Hours decrease in the off-season (July-December), and increase during our garden build season (January-June).

Salary/Benefits: $30,000 per year. The position does not come with benefits.
